More M-flares are in the offing, but they will not be Earth-directed until AR1719 turns more squarely toward our planet. Geoeffective solar activity could begin early next week. www.spaceweather.com
NOAA forecasters estimate a 30% chance of M-class solar flares today. The likely source would be new sunspot AR1719, now rotating over the sun's eastern limb. The sunspot announced itself on April 5th with an M2-class eruption recorded by the Solar Dynamics Observatory. On the Richter Scale of Solar Flares, an M2-category blast is not considered especially intense. Nevertheless, this was one of the biggest flares of the year so far. The reason it stands out is that solar activity in 2013 has been unexpectedly low.

WEEKEND AURORAS? A solar wind stream is expected to brush against Earth's magnetic field on April 6-7, possibly causing geomagnetic disturbances around the poles. Arctic sky watchers should be alert for auroras beaming through the waxing twilight of northern spring. VENUS AND MARS CONVERGE: Venus and Mars are converging for a close encounter, but don't bother looking because the conjunction is happening in broad daylight. The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) took this picture of the planets only a few degrees from the Sun on April 4th: At closest approach on April 6th, Venus and Mars will be only 1o apart.
After that, Mars will move even closer to the sun, which could limit NASA's contact with Mars rovers and orbiters. According to a NASA press release, "The sun can easily disrupt radio transmissions during the near-alignment. To prevent an impaired command from reaching an orbiter or rover, mission controllers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory are preparing to suspend sending any commands to spacecraft at Mars for weeks in April. Transmissions from Mars to Earth will also be reduced." Mars will be at its closest to the sun, a slim 0.4 degrees on April 17th. The ongoing dance of the sun and planets is invisible to the human eye, but coronagraphs can see the show. In Norse mythology the Rainbow Bridge connects Earth with Asgard, the home of the gods. The Greek messenger Iris is dressed in rainbow colors with golden wings. As her tale progresses she takes to traveling on a rainbow. In the myths of Australian Aborigines, the Rainbow Serpent is the god and the creator of all. Rainbows also appear in Navajo and Hindu tales of creation. Even in the Bible Noah saves the animals by taking two of each species on his Ark. After the great flood Noah sees a rainbow symbolizing the rebirth of the land. A rainbow has come to represent God’s promise to never again send a flood to destroy all living things. The material world is represented by the first, primary, rainbow, while the second rainbow is the spiritual world. Seeing a single rainbow is fairly common, so something we take for granted in the universe, but when we see a double rainbow we stop and take time to admire the wonder of the universe. Double Rainbows are considered symbolic of transformations in your life. A primary Rainbow can be seen to illustrate a human descending from heaven. The secondary arc in a Double Rainbow has reversed colors so the human figure is ascending from the material earth to the spiritual heaven. Therefore seeing a Double Rainbow is considered a very auspicious occasion and a reason for reflection and meditation.
